'Born Digital' Swipe Festival

Born Digital

This is a topic which has really gotten me thinking in the past few days. As I sit here typing on my laptop, listening to Arctic Monkeys (accessed on Spotify) with the hum of the radio distantly humming through the house and flicking through my Facebook Newsfeed on my smartphone, I realise how much technology has affected the lives of millions on this planet, in particular in the past decade or so called ‘The Digital Age’.
I can still recall when we got our first ‘House Computer’ in my house for Christmas when I was around eight years old, nearly a decade ago.

At the time Wi-Fi didn’t exist so we had to use the dial-up connection, which looking back on now was quite horrific and worked at a pain-staking slow rate. However when you’re eight years old playing games on the computer (Pinball had my heart) attempting to become the latest Picasso on Microsoft Paint and worrying about what a ‘search engine’ is, minor things like a slow Internet connection don’t really matter. Did I mention I once thought Google was a virus on our computer?

When we first switched on the computer and it made the distinct Windows XP sound, I ran out of the room fearing for my life, thinking it was a virus. Literally everything I’d ever read and heard about the Internet was that, ‘’you don’t click on the ads, they’re a virus,’’ ‘’don’t go on that website, it’s a virus, ‘’ and so forth.  I believed that practically everything was a virus! I think as the Internet was relatively new (my school had recently gotten a computer room with computers that had Microsoft XP, huge celebrations!) there was a lot of scaremongering about ‘The World Wide Web’ and how every link you click COULD be a virus and destroy your computer.

However my attitude to the Internet soon changed and I began to watch videos on YouTube to pass the time, as I wasn’t allowed on Bebo or Myspace which I thought was the greatest tragedy known to man. I remember a year or so later setting up my own YouTube channel (which no longer exists thankfully) so I could actually ‘favourite’ and comment on videos! I was a huge Rihanna fan back then aged 10, ‘Umbrella’ had been released that summer so I ran to buy her album in CD form not on iTunes, a relatively new phenomenon at that stage. (But that could have been a virus too!)

Another leap into technology and the digital world was when I was given my first mobile phone for my tenth birthday. When I look back, I think it’s an incredibly young age to have a phone, however being the youngest child I can imagine I used a huge amount of ‘pester power’ to get the phone and other electrical items during the years such as the PlayStation 2 (in pink of course) a Nintendo Wii and other electrical items throughout my childhood.

I can still recall when, at thirteen and a half, I set up a Facebook account. The ‘thirteen-and-a-half’ was a big deal for me, as I was a whopping six months over the age you had to be when joining the website, unlike many of my peers.  As I’m writing this, I’m scrolling through my Timeline from 2010/11/12 and can honestly admit it’s possibly the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever seen.  Despite thinking I was ‘cool’ for being on Facebook, most of the status’ I posted were littered with poor grammar, ‘’txt talk,’’ and lots more embarrassing and unspeakable things. ‘’Like for a rate out of ten’’ is something that features highly, along with ‘’Like for a H’O’’ An Honest Opinion, which is making me shudder just from thinking of it.

In a whirlwind of the past four/five years, I’ve joined various websites in this ‘Digital Era’ starting with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, YouTube (again!) and my two latest favourites, Tumblr and BlogSpot. My biggest leap into the Digital world so far has definitely been by setting up my blog ‘The Random Life of Aveen’ in March 2013 following a school trip to London.

August 2014 and my blog has nearly 30,000 page views along with nominations in ‘The Blog Awards Ireland’. For a person who once thought that the search engine Google was a virus and could rob my parent’s credit cards and details (even without buying anything on the Internet, but viruses were clever and could do anything you know) I think that this is definitely a big achievement in the time of all things digital.

I don’t really think I personally was ‘Born Digital’ I genuinely think that I’m a 90’s kid as I was born in 1996. It was only in my ‘later’ years that technology began to affect me and my everyday life, unlike people who are just two years or so younger than me. I slowly but surely began to embrace the Digital Age as any young, enthusiastic child would and now I’m an absolute Internet and technology addict.

However it’s when I see my cousins who are all younger than eight years old, I genuinely believe that they are ‘Born Digital.’ When your four year old cousin can use an iPad to take selfies, play games and browse the Internet but can’t read or write as they haven’t started primary school, I believe that that is being Born Digital. At age four I had a baby Annabell, which only said one sound and occasionally made slurping noises when you fed it.

I may have been born a few years too early to be ‘Born Digital’ however I still believe I’ve experienced a huge technological advance in my lifetime and a definite relaxation on the Internet, viruses aren’t a life or death situation as advertised when I was young, they’re just extremely irritating! I’ve a cousin aged eight who uploads to YouTube about Minecraft, at that age I was playing Pinball on the house computer, not on a fancy iPad or using an iPhone.  (The iPhone was released three years later when I was eleven or so) But as I sit here tapping away, sending Snapchat’s, I realise how different my life as an eight year old nearly ten years ago in 2004 is to the typical eight year old, ‘Born Digital’ in 2014.

All The Voices In My Mind, Calling Out Across The Line...

Hey Everyone!

So this blog post is a few days late and in all honesty, I don't really have an excuse! Every day is melting seamlessly into another, leaving me in the lurch and thinking of all the things I could have finished in the past tense, instead of actually doing the work I wanted to do.

However, what matters now is that I'm actually progressing to finish the random things I've procrastinated for the past few days. During the summer months I seem to just 'lose the plot' as my routine is thrown out of sorts for a few months. I suppose you could call it having freedom but I think for a few blissful weeks I let it go to my head, resulting in a week or two of just thinking of what I could have achieved in that wasted time instead of progressing further to achieve anything.

I have a huge 'block' in my head about school. It's my last year in second-level education and I think my mind is in denial over this somewhat terrifying prospect. However let's be positive, there's still over a month of Summer holidays for me to procrastinate and enjoy! I'm planning another YouTube video soon as I recently made some purchases online (some of which arrived!) from Roxy and Hollister so I'll be doing a Mini-Haul soon and maybe another video or two that may contain a trace of Sprinkles or Awkwardness (Watch this space)

Down below are some random things I bought during the week. I was down the town with my friends and for the first time in probably 6 months bought KISS magazine. I started reading the magazine when I was around 10 or 11 but stopped at the start of this year, mainly as I felt I had outgrown the magazine and personally, enjoyed the previous editor's styles of writing and also choice of topics. (I'm so picky I know)

I also bought 'The Book Thief' on DVD. I read the book (and cried a little) earlier this year and heard rave reviews about the film. As of yet I've to finish watching the DVD but the half hour or so I saw was utterly excellent. I just need a quiet evening or afternoon to just sit down and watch it. I also bought some iTunes cards because well, music.

I also got my hair cut for the first time in like 3 months. I'm usually very good and get it cut once a month or every 6 weeks but with Summer exams and going to the Gaeltacht for 3 weeks, time seemed to melt away. Before I knew it my hair was extremely thick and bushy so I knew it was time to get my hair thinned and cut again so my hair is nice and styled again!

Last Thursday I went to the Chinese with some friends for Viv's birthday. We all had a great evening and had amazing milkshakes afterwards (it's tradition okay) Grace was there too but we were sitting at other sides of the extremely long table, ooops.

Photos from my week!

Wexford played against Waterford on Saturday so again I'm embracing being a Yellow Belly and wearing my jersey. Let's hope the match in Thurles will be good!

So that's about it from me, I'll hopefully be posting later on in the week. I'm also blogging on Collab Sunflower! Check out the collaboration blog, each week we have a different theme and it's just brilliant.
I'll be posting on Friday about  'A Momentous Memory'

Easter, Selfies Beside Cars, Cinema Trips & Sunshine!

Hey Everyone!

It's the end of the first week of the Easter Holidays! Time flies when you're having fun. I decided to go back to the way I used to write blog posts, ie. The title was about some of the weird and random things I did in that week followed by corresponding photos.

Earlier this week I was hanging out with my friend Grace, our videos are now on YouTube! However I took it easy for the rest of the week. Despite being a Fifth Year studying all my subjects at higher level, I was given no homework for the Easter, merely warned about how ''Next year you'll have so much work you won't have a minute to rest, enjoy this Easter'' Lovely parting words.

I've basically spent the entire week on the internet, on Netflix and sleeping. Honestly, I really needed a week of just 'Me' time. The past few months have been quite tiring in school and the exhaustion was beginning to show both mentally and physically. However even just a few days away from my school books has made such a difference.

On Thursday night I was with my parents and brother, and we spotted this utterly beautiful car in the car park, the Audi R8. Basically an Audi R8 is my dream car and I have only seen three of these cars in real life. One when I was thirteen, one in London last year and this one on Thursday (And we saw it again yesterday!) My brother and I both started fangirling and took selfies and photos beside it. We didn't touch the car, mainly because they're worth over 100,000 euros and also because it looked SO SHINY AND SLEEK. Sorry, got a little excited over the car again.

I was doing some shopping with my Mam and came across the cutest things ever for Easter too. I bought a little set of ''Spring Lambs'' and a ''Tiny Talker'' toy lamb. I bought these in Tesco but I think they sold out pretty quickly. I love lambs (I have a little poster of a lamb in my room, they're so cute and fluffy) The talking lamb even baa's when you press its tummy, aww!

Friday was simply a gorgeous day. The weather was fabulous. My brother and I brought my 4 year old cousin down to Tesco where the chocolate company Lindt had a roulette wheel set up and you won chocolate! My little cousin spun the wheel and I did too! I was like a little child when I was given the Lindt milk chocolate ducks.

Later on I went to the cinema to see 'The Amazing Spider Man 2'' which was released that day. I really enjoyed the film, particularly Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone (I ship it in real life and also on-screen) I will be honest, I was a little teary towards the end (Okay I may have shed a tear) However I really enjoyed the film.

So today is Easter Saturday, and my Mam has given me my Easter eggs for tomorrow. I'll be writing another blog post in the next few days but for now, it's back to Netflix (and being irritated by my brother who keeps walking into my room and chatting approximately every five minutes, help me)

Posing beside the Audi R8!

The little lamb, so cute.

The Lindt chocolate ducks, quack!

''Am I really beside this car?!''

The Only Thing Embedded In My Mindset, Is How I'm Addicted To Progress..

Hey Everyone!

Lyrics: The Coronas ~ Addicted To Progress
Sorry for the later than usual blog post today, I was actually being sociable this weekend for once! *Shock horror*

This week was my second week back after Mid-Term, in reality it feels like two months. I'm utterly exhausted at the moment, I've actually no idea why I'm so tired. Everything seems to be so stressful and I keep wishing there was more hours in the day to either study or sleep.

It's honestly shocking how quickly time is flying by, in 3 months, I'll be sitting somewhere in Galway talking Irish. In September when I started Fifth Year, I felt that the year was going to last for ever and the Gaeltacht felt like an unreachable destination. With each passing day and week, it's edging ever closer in my mind.

Monday to Friday was literally a ''blink and you'll miss it'' type of week. But Pancake Tuesday was glorious, I'm definitely in love with lemon and sugar pancakes. I was extremely positive on Monday morning however this positivity evaporated by the end of the day. At the end of each day I was practically begging to go home, even the other students blocking my locker block would set me crazy. (I don't cope well with a lack of sleep as you can probably tell)

We had a maths test on Wednesday, which I had a number of sleepless nights over (Might as well be honest) Due to the classes abysmal performance, we were given another test on Friday which hopefully will be better. I've been having nightmares and weird dreams about maths nearly every night since Monday, it's been horrible! (Imagine maths equations like chasing you near cliffs and screaming to find the volume of random objects, yep)

On Friday evening was the last week of the Irish Club until September (It's Spleodar, can't say which one though, cos that's a little stalkerish) and my friends and I were sad that Spleodar was over as we loved talking in Irish, playing games, eating pizza and of course, gossiping as Gaeilge!

Which leads onto why I wasn't on the interwebs on Saturday! All the Spleodar clubs went to Carlow for ''Slogadh Spleodar'' where we were in a parade all over Carlow all carrying balloons for Seachtain Na Gaeilge. Afterwards we had lunch and listened to an Irish band called ''Mo Hat Mo Gheansaí'' who were savage and played lots of songs in Irish (including one of my favourites, The Coronas, Heroes or Ghosts, link below to The Coronas singing it)

After Mo Hat Mo Gheansaí's performance (which had everyone up and dancing) We went to another very Irish place, Supermacs. I will admit now, I'd never been to Supermacs, mainly because it's not in my town (Niall Horan is obsessed with the place apparently!) The place was full of Spleodar students. Afterwards we began rehearsing for the Comórtas (Competition) where each club had their own song to sing and the best would be the winner.

*laughs really awkwardly* Our song was about Domino's pizza, honestly. The song was to tune of Waka Waka by Shakira. It was honestly hilarious singing about pizza ''Ni Mhaith Linn Glasraí'' ~ We Don't Like Vegetables, that was a line from the song! I'd post the actual lyrics but I'm laughing so hard thinking about us standing up on the stage singing the song about pizza, only in Spleodar! :)

Overall, it was an interesting week, full of plenty of ups and downs, but that's just the unpredictability of life. I try not to compare my ''behind-the scenes to someone else's highlight reel'' It may seem that bloggers have ''amazing lives'' (I have been told this by people) But in reality, I'm the quiet girl in the class who rarely speaks unless to say ''here'' when my name is called. People think I'm oozing with self confidence, it's the total opposite. I love writing, and this is my way of writing.

Photos from my week!
A random selfie, I'm still getting used to my glasses.
Top and hoody are both Roxy.

The place where most of life is now spent. ie, studying (Student-Dying)

I bought this months issue of Company magazine with Zoella on the cover! I've read most of it and it's absolutely brilliant. I loved Zoella's interview and photoshoot, the Grease t shirt was gorgeous.

A random selfie taken this morning. I feel as though my glasses make me look younger? Idk.

''Aveen your parent teacher meetings are on Wednesday'' *Fear in my eyes*

First trip to Supermacs with malteser ice-cream. Half my OTP (Dantesers)

One of my favourite songs possibly ever, Heroes or Ghosts by The Coronas, in Irish!

A Book Review: Allegiant by Veronica Roth

Hey Everyone!

I realised today that my blog is nearly a year old, yet I've never actually written a book review! This came as quite a shock to me seeing as reading books is how I spend most of my spare time. I decided to pick an interesting book which I read over Christmas. This book is Allegiant, the third book of the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth.

As I mentioned previously, Allegiant is the third and final book of the Divergent trilogy. The book (Allegiant) follows the protagonist Tris Prior after the faction system has been very much destroyed. Tris is offered the chance to leave and go explore ''past the fence'' into the unknown along with Tobias (Four)

Tris believes she's ready and that she will find a new life outside the fence with Tobias. They explore outside the fence and are extremely alarmed by what they find and are told.

I don't want to spoil too much of the book for anyone who hasn't read it, but, this may sound negative, I didn't find the book as enjoyable as Divergent and Insurgent! I felt that Allegiant was slightly rushed and the author Veronica Roth, was dead set on the particular ending she chose. I feel that she only wanted that particular ending and nothing, not even flaws in the story, was going to change that.

I was quite addicted to the book, I literally could not put it down, but I felt the ending could have been different. I did enjoy the dual perspective (Divergent & Insurgent had been written from Tris' point of view) whilst Allegiant was from both Tris' and Tobias' perspectives.

For anyone who's read it, you may be asking ''Did Aveen cry reading the book?'' The answer is yes, that ending nearly destroyed my emotions! I was reading the book on Christmas Day and finished it at 11pm, subsequently by throwing the book against the wall (that's why it looks a little battered above) and crying my eyes out for a few hours afterwards.

I wouldn't deter anyone from reading the trilogy, they're truly excellent books which are good for escapism whenever your own world is slightly tedious. I'd definitely recommend the trilogy to anyone who loves dystopian fantasy books such as The Hunger Games and Noughts & Crosses to name a few.

On another note, I just uploaded a new YouTube video called ''How To Deal With Negative People'' This video is something different on my channel as I usually post somewhat comedic videos, so I would love to know your reaction and how you thought the video was.
